Ginès Gonzales, French Champion in 1967, passed away

It is with deep sadness that AS Saint-Étienne learned of the passing of Ginès Gonzales, former defender for Les Verts, born in 1938 in Saint-Étienne.

Trained at Olympique Saint-Étienne, Ginès Gonzales was spotted and quickly joined ASSE, his favorite club. A true Saint-Étienne native, attached to his roots and his colors, Ginès Gonzales had two spells in the green jersey (1957-1961, then 1965-1967), interrupted by a spell at RC Strasbourg (1961-1965), before ending his playing career with a former pro license at Roanne.

During his years with Les Verts and after participating in the 1960 Olympic Games in Rome, Ginès Gonzales rubbed shoulders and played alongside some of Les Verts' biggest names, including Robert Herbin, Jean-Michel Larqué, Hervé Revelli, Rachid Mekhloufi, Aimé Jacquet, and his close friend Georges Bereta.

After a successful 1966-1967 season, he was part of the team that won the French championship in 1967, under Jean Snella. A tough defender who was uncompromising in one-on-one situations, he embodied the kind of reliable player that a team can always count on. After his playing career, he also coached the amateur section of ASSE. Modest, humble, almost self-effacing, Ginès Gonzales was a discreet man, sometimes anxious not to disturb, but always respected.

AS Saint-Étienne extends its sincere condolences to his family and loved ones.
